Vertical Slice Project

Vertical Slice was the project I worked on during the second period of my second year. This is a project we had to do as a team. I was the lead developer on the team, while there were two other developers and five artists. As lead developer, I was responsible for planning for the developers and managing the GitHub. Vertical Slice is about recreating 15 seconds of gameplay from a pre-existing game. There were many options and we ended up choosing the turn-based RPG Darkest Dungeon.

This was my hardest project thus far. The combination of 3D and 2D elements was hard to get right. During the development of this project I worked on the combat system. The game works on a turn-based system where every character has their own stats and abilities. Making a system in which this all comes together with enemy AI and a good turn order was quite the task, but I managed to pull it off.

In this video you can see our final product. Abilities changing based on the character, enemies attacking the player, and the general combat are all things I made for this project, while the camera and of course the art were made by different people. We managed to create the core of Darkest Dungeon's combat with all the moving parts and animations. Compared to our peers, our project stood out.

The video above shows what we had to recreate for our project. I am quite proud of our results and the effort we put into it. I learned a lot from this project, especially as the lead developer. If you want to check out our GitHub or the build on it, click the link below.
